Enderman

Mobs

Enderman — mob.

Spawning

Endermen are tall neutral mobs that can appear in all three dimensions. In the Overworld and End they require light level 0; in the Nether they can spawn at light level 7 or lower, with Nether Wastes, Soul Sand Valley, and Warped Forest providing the main Nether habitats.

Encounter

An enderman is encountered in the world rather than crafted. It is a neutral monster until a player or another mob provokes it, so a dark farm must leave enough headroom for its tall hitbox.

Drops

The validated entity loot table rolls zero or one ender pearl. Looting can add up to one more pearl per level. A player or tamed wolf also receives 5 experience points when it makes the kill; a carried block is dropped when the enderman dies.

Sounds

Endermen use a distinctive vocal family for idle, stare, scream, teleport, hurt, and death events. The key Java events are kept as technical identifiers so sound references remain searchable.

Behavior

Endermen are neutral until provoked. A player within 64 blocks can anger one by looking at its eyes for a short moment unless a carved pumpkin hides the player's face. Once hostile, it runs quickly, teleports around attacks, carries selected blocks, and takes damage from water, rain, or water potions.

History

Endermen were introduced during the Beta 1.8 cycle as gaze-sensitive teleporting mobs. Their health was raised to 40 during development, ranged attacks were made to miss by teleporting away, and later releases added Nether spawning, carried-block drops, and hostility toward all endermites.
