Drowned

Mobs

Drowned — mob.

Natural spawning

Drowned spawn underwater in oceans and rivers, including deep oceans. Natural spawning requires a water position and dark conditions; outside the more-frequent river tag, the source also requires the spawn point to be below sea level by more than five blocks.

Drops

Drowned can drop rotten flesh, copper ingots, tridents, and nautilus shells. The copper and trident pools are conditional, while the shell can be carried as guaranteed equipment when it was selected during spawning.

Combat and interactions

A drowned targets players, villagers, iron golems, axolotls, and baby turtles on land. It can carry a nautilus shell in its offhand, and a naturally spawned trident wielder can ride a zombie nautilus when the local biome rules allow it.

Sounds

The drowned switches its ambient, hurt, and death sounds when it is in water. Step, swim, and trident-shot sounds complete the aquatic combat profile.

Behavior

The drowned is an aquatic zombie variant with amphibious pathfinding. It swims toward targets, moves toward water in daylight, can leave the water at night, and uses a trident for ranged attacks or a fishing rod as a rare piece of equipment.

Trivia

At night a drowned can leave the water to search for a beach, while daylight makes it seek water. This is why a drowned farm needs both a controlled water volume and a reliable light boundary.
