Iron Sword
Iron Sword — item.
Obtaining
An iron sword is crafted from two iron ingots and a stick. In Java survival it can also appear as chest loot, as a weaponsmith trade, or in the hands of some undead mobs. These sources may provide a damaged or enchanted sword, so the crafting recipe remains the predictable route for a fresh weapon.
| Crafted output | 1 iron sword |
|---|---|
| Chest sources | Trial chambers, strongholds, villages and other validated chest tables |
| Mob source | Zombies, husks and zombie villagers can spawn with one |
| Trading | Weaponsmith can offer an enchanted iron sword |
| Renewable | Yes |
| Stack size | 1 |
Breaking
A sword is also an efficient tool for cobwebs, bamboo and a few other blocks. Breaking a non-instant block with a sword consumes two durability points, so using it as a mining tool is costly. In Creative mode it cannot break ordinary blocks, but it can still destroy placed entities such as minecarts and armor stands.
| Fast block targets | Cobwebs and bamboo |
|---|---|
| Durability cost | 2 points for a non-instant block |
| Silk Touch | Can preserve cobwebs when available |

Usage
A sword is a compact melee weapon for attacks and can receive weapon enchantments. An iron sword deals 6 points of base damage, attacks at 1.6 attacks per second, and reaches entities within the normal three-block melee range. Keeping it in the hotbar makes common hostile encounters easier to handle than using a building tool.
| Base damage | 6 |
|---|---|
| Attack speed | 1.6 attacks per second |
| Attack range | 3 blocks |
| Enchantability | 14 |
| Durability | 250 |
| Sweep | Damages nearby targets when the attack is charged |
Related recipes
The sword belongs to the iron equipment family; its ingot material can also be smelted into iron nuggets.
Repairing
Two damaged iron swords can be combined in a crafting grid or an anvil. The resulting durability is the sum of both swords plus a five-percent bonus, subject to the normal durability cap. Iron ingots are the material repair item for this tool family.
| Repair item | Iron ingot |
|---|---|
| Combination | Two damaged iron swords |
| Bonus | 5% extra durability before the cap |
Sounds
Iron swords use the generic weapon interaction sounds for swings, hits and breaking. The exact cue depends on whether the action connects with an entity, misses, or exhausts the item durability.

History
Swords were present in the earliest survival combat experiments; after tool tiers were introduced, the original sword became the iron tier. The modern recipe and 250-point durability keep that early role while later updates added sweeping attacks and the recipe book.

Trivia
The iron sword texture originated in an earlier Notch project and became the visual basis for the other sword tiers. Its plain iron colour also makes a damaged or enchanted variant easy to identify in a loot chest.
