Slime

Mobs

Slime — mob.

Natural generation

Swamp slimes depend on nighttime conditions, low light, and the surface height window of that biome, while slime chunks provide a repeatable underground source below Y 40. Natural spawning is disabled on Peaceful difficulty. Keep the spawn floor open and the collection route lit so the result is easy to inspect.

Data: Natural generation
Swamp heightAbove Y 50 and below Y 70
Swamp lightAt most the random light threshold used by the spawn rule
Slime chunk heightBelow Y 40
Slime chunk chance1 in 10 chunks, then a 1 in 10 spawn attempt
Peaceful difficultyNo natural spawning

Obtaining

Slimes appear in swamps and slime chunks; splitting them produces slimeballs. A marked platform and a collection trench make a repeated encounter easier to observe without losing the small pieces.

Drops

A large slime yields experience through its size chain: large slimes give 4 experience, medium slimes 2, and small slimes 1 when killed by a player. Small slimes can drop 0–2 slimeballs; Looting can increase that range, while frogs can produce the slimeball through their own interaction.

Data: Drops
Large slime4 experience; splits into 2–4 medium slimes
Medium slime2 experience; splits into 2–4 small slimes
Small slime1 experience; 0–2 slimeballs
LootingCan increase the small-slime slimeball range

Usage

Slimeballs are used for slime blocks and sticky mechanisms. A single stack can connect a farm to pistons and other compact contraptions without mixing the raw drop into a building palette.

Sounds

Slimes use size-specific hostile-mob sounds. Large and medium slimes have separate hurt, death, jump, and landing events from tiny slimes, while attacks use the shared slime attack event.

Behavior

Slimes move by hopping every 10–30 ticks and search for a player or iron golem within 16 blocks. They can swim and climb ladders or scaffolding, but they do not pathfind around hazards and may walk straight into lava, cactus, or a drop. Large slimes split into two to four smaller slimes when defeated, and the final pieces provide slimeballs. Leave room around the target so the split does not scatter into an inaccessible corner.
