Obtaining

An apple is an uncommon leaf drop. Oak and dark oak leaves have a 0.5% chance to drop one when they decay or are broken without shears or Silk Touch; Fortune raises that chance to 0.556%, 0.625%, or 0.833% at levels I, II, or III. Apples also occur in selected generated chest loot, including village houses, igloos, strongholds, and the starting bonus chest.

Usage

Eating an apple restores 4 hunger points and 2.4 saturation. It can also heal, grow, or improve the temper of a horse, donkey, or mule, making a small leaf harvest useful both for food and for early animal work. It is eaten directly from the selected hotbar slot and does not need a furnace or crafting station.

Crafting ingredient

Place one apple in the centre of a shaped recipe and surround it with eight gold ingots to make a golden apple. The recipe turns a small food drop into a valuable emergency item without needing a smelting step.
