Obsidian
Obsidian — block.
Obtaining
Obsidian forms when flowing water touches a lava source. It can be created in the world by natural springs and lava pools, and it also appears in ruined portals, End structures, woodland mansions, and selected ocean ruins. Bastion chests and piglin bartering provide additional generated sources.
The block is renewable in Survival: lava can be farmed with pointed dripstone and cauldrons, and a generated Nether portal or End platform can supply more obsidian. A block mined without a diamond or netherite pickaxe does not drop itself.

Breaking
Obsidian is mined with a pickaxe. It is one of the slowest common blocks to break and only drops when the pickaxe is diamond or netherite tier; other tools can finish the animation but return no block.

Usage
The block occupies a standard full volume and is shown with an isometric preview.
Obsidian is the structural material for Nether portal frames and an ingredient in enchanting tables, ender chests, beacons, and end crystals. Its high blast resistance makes it a practical defensive block for bases, although the wither can destroy it with its special blue skulls and body attacks.
Pistons cannot push or pull obsidian. This immovability, together with its explosion resistance, is useful when a redstone build needs a permanent anchor.
| Shape | Full cube |
|---|---|
| Rendering | Isometric preview |
| Nether portal | Frame from 4×5 to 23×23 |
| End crystal | One of two valid supporting blocks |
| Wither | Blue skulls and body attacks can destroy it |
| Piston | Cannot push or pull |
Crafting ingredient
Obsidian is used in the recipes for an enchanting table, an ender chest, a beacon, and an end crystal. The block itself is not consumed by portal activation; a completed frame is ignited separately.
| Enchanting table | 4 obsidian |
|---|---|
| Ender chest | 8 obsidian |
| Beacon | 3 obsidian |
| End crystal | 1 obsidian |
Generated loot
The block loot table returns one obsidian block when the block survives the breaking event. Tool requirements still apply to the actual block break, so the table does not turn a wooden pickaxe into a valid mining tool.

| Condition | Survives explosion |
| Required tool | Diamond or netherite pickaxe |
Sounds
Obsidian uses the stone block sound family for placement, breaking, stepping, and hitting. Its long breaking sound is a useful cue that a tool below diamond tier will not produce a drop.

History
Obsidian began as an exceptionally durable block, then became renewable when water-and-lava formation and Nether portals were introduced. End platforms, ruined portals, mansions, ocean ruins, bastions and piglin bartering later broadened its sources, while the blue wither skull remained its important exception to blast resistance.

Trivia
Obsidian is a volcanic glass in the real world, while its in-game identity is defined by extreme durability. It is one of the strongest Survival-obtainable blocks and forms the contrast material for crying obsidian.
