Archaeology to be Added in 1.20

An article from the developers was published on the official game website, announcing the introduction of a new game mechanic - archaeology. This mechanic will be added in new snapshots and will gradually expand as development progresses.

Archaeology will allow players to excavate special locations in the desert. Players will be offered a choice of a good spot near desert temples. As development continues, other excavation sites will be added based on player feedback.

Excavations will be carried out in a new block - "Suspicious Sand". To do this, players will be able to use a new tool - the "Brush", which must be used to break the sand and then clean it. This will allow players to find "Pottery Shards" and other items.

Pottery Shards will have a unique pattern painted on them, and by combining 4 shards, players will be able to craft a Clay Pot. The patterns on the Clay Pot will tell a story and decorate players' builds.

As the developers note, in future snapshots the archaeology mechanic will be expanded and new elements will be added that will allow players to dive deeper into the world of Minecraft.
