Spider
Spider — mob.
Spawning
Spiders spawn in dark Overworld spaces and use the standard hostile cave profile. In the local biome data their monster entry is a group of four with weight 100; the same family can also appear in trial-chamber melee encounters.
| Monster group | 4 spiders, weight 100 |
|---|---|
| Light requirement | Dark hostile-spawn conditions |
| Trial encounter | Melee spider spawner family |
Drops
The entity loot table rolls string independently from a player-kill spider-eye pool. String ranges from 0–2 before Looting, while the eye pool can produce 0–1 only when the spider is killed by a player.
| String | 0–2; Looting can increase the upper bound |
|---|---|
| Spider eye | 0–1; player-kill condition |

Combat and interactions
A spider targets players and iron golems in dark conditions, can carry a skeleton as a jockey with a one-percent spawn chance, and ignores Poison effects. Its cave navigation uses wall-climber pathfinding rather than a flying or swimming movement model.
| Targets | Players and iron golems |
|---|---|
| Jockey | Skeleton rider, 1% spawn chance |
| Poison | Immune |
| Navigation | Wall-climber pathfinding |
Sounds
Spiders have separate ambient, hurt, death, and step sounds. Their sound profile stays tied to the mob entity even while it is climbing a wall or carrying a rider.

|---|---|
| Hurt | entity.spider.hurt |
| Death | entity.spider.death |
| Step | entity.spider.step |
Behavior
Spiders climb walls and navigate caves as hostile mobs. The climbing behavior changes pathing rather than the loot rules, so the same two loot pools apply whether the spider reaches the player on the floor or on a wall. They avoid non-scared armadillos, leap at targets, and stop their attack goal when bright light breaks the hostile condition.

Data values
The mob uses the `minecraft:spider` identifier and its drop source is the namespaced entity loot table. The spawn egg is a separate creative-facing item and does not replace natural spawning.

History
The spider remains a compact hostile cave mob with wall climbing, a melee leap, and conditional drops. The current entity definition also makes its health, speed, sound set, poison immunity, and rare skeleton jockey behavior explicit.

| Movement model | Wall climber with leap attack |
| Loot model | String pool plus player-kill spider-eye pool |
Trivia
On Hard difficulty, a newly spawned spider can receive one of four effects: Speed, Strength, Regeneration, or Invisibility. The effect is a spawn-time property and is not guaranteed for every spider.
