The crafted pair is the normal source. Keep one in the hotbar when clearing a forest, collecting wool, or exploring caves because several plants and fragile blocks only preserve their form when cut with shears.

Usage

Shears harvest wool, leaves, vines, cobwebs, and other delicate blocks without turning them into their usual alternate drops. They also shear sheep and mooshrooms, collect a bee nest's honeycomb when the nest is full, and carve a pumpkin into a wearable block. These interactions make shears useful both for building materials and for compact farming setups.

Utility interactions
