Natural generation
Smooth basalt forms the outer shell of amethyst geodes and can also be found in ancient cities. It is a dark, banded building stone that often marks a geode before the inner amethyst blocks are visible. In a geode, it surrounds the calcite and amethyst layers as the outermost generated shell.
