Basalt

Blocks

Basalt — block.

Obtaining

Mine basalt with a pickaxe to collect one block. The local block loot table returns the block itself when it survives an explosion; hand mining does not provide the normal drop because the block requires the correct tool.

Breaking

Basalt drops itself when mined with any pickaxe. A different tool or an empty hand breaks the block without a normal item drop, while explosions only preserve the drop when the block survives the blast.

Natural generation

Basalt is the dark volcanic stone of Basalt Deltas and Soul Sand Valleys. Basalt Deltas add basalt blobs and small/large basalt-column features, while Soul Sand Valleys add basalt pillars. It can also appear in bastion remnants. A separate liquid rule turns lava into basalt when the lava is above soul soil and touches blue ice, making the block renewable. The column dimensions come from the generator: small columns are 1–4 blocks high, while large columns are 5–10 blocks high.

Crafting and processing

Four basalt blocks make four polished basalt blocks in a two-by-two recipe. A stonecutter makes the polished form directly, and a furnace smelts basalt into smooth basalt with 0.1 experience.

Usage

The block occupies a standard full volume and is shown with an isometric preview.

Basalt is a building material with a column-friendly texture. A stonecutter makes polished basalt, four blocks craft four polished blocks, and smelting basalt produces smooth basalt. Placing the block against a face records an axis, so pillars can be built vertically or turned sideways without a separate block type.

Sounds

Basalt uses a dedicated basalt sound family for placement, footsteps, mining, breaking, falling, and impacts. The same dense profile is retained by the polished and smooth variants.

Behavior

The blockstate stores an axis of `x`, `y`, or `z`. The axis is selected by the face used for placement, which lets the same basalt block serve as a floor, wall, or pillar material without a rotation tool. Basalt uses the same axis-based pillar model as the polished variant, and its hard stone profile requires the correct tool for drops.
