Obtaining
Natural hearts are hidden inside pale-oak trunks. The block can be preserved when mined with a Silk Touch tool; other tools yield resin clumps instead.

Breaking
Silk Touch makes the heart itself drop. Without Silk Touch the loot table rolls one to three resin clumps, Fortune can increase the roll, and the table caps the result at nine clumps. Explosion decay is applied to the clump drop.

Natural generation
The creaking heart is the living controller of a Pale Garden creaking. It is found embedded in pale-oak trees, with its axis following the log-like orientation of the block. The surrounding pale-oak frame determines whether the heart can wake during the night cycle.

Usage
The block occupies a standard full volume and is shown with an isometric preview.
The creaking heart drives creaking behaviour and connects the pale-oak wood family with that creature. Its state changes between uprooted, dormant, and awake; only the aligned wood frame lets it protect a linked creaking at night. When that creaking is hit, the heart can grow resin clumps on nearby pale-oak logs.

Behavior
Place the heart between two matching pale-oak logs, stripped logs, wood, or stripped wood with the same orientation. In the Overworld it is dormant during the day and awake at night; an awake heart can maintain one linked creaking until the heart is broken. Removing the frame before the link is established returns it to the uprooted state. The active state is driven by the environment's creaking-active condition rather than by a separate redstone input.
