Obtaining

A name tag can be crafted from paper and any nugget in the `metal_nuggets` tag. It also appears in treasure fishing and can be bought from a wandering trader; generated chest tables remain another source in the reference data.

Usage

A name tag must be renamed in an anvil before it is applied to a mob. Applying it consumes the tag, stores the custom name, and makes that mob persistent. The wandering-trader purchase has five uses in the source trade record.

Behavior

Named mobs display the custom name when viewed nearby. The name is stored as the entity's `CustomName`; special names such as Dinnerbone, Grumm, jeb_, Toast and Johnny trigger familiar name-tag easter eggs.

Data values

The item identifier is `minecraft:name_tag`; it stacks to 64 and is consumed when applied to an entity. Its custom name is stored on the target entity rather than as a separate name-tag variant.
