Deepslate
Deepslate — block.
Obtaining
Mining deepslate with a pickaxe enchanted with Silk Touch drops the block itself. Without Silk Touch it drops cobbled deepslate, while a different tool drops nothing; its breaking time is twice that of stone.

Natural generation
Deepslate makes up most solid terrain below Y=0 in the Overworld. Stone gradually gives way to deepslate between Y=8 and Y=0, and large amounts also appear in ancient cities.

Usage
The block occupies a standard full volume and is shown with an isometric preview.
Deepslate is a building material for polished, brick, tiled, slab, stair and wall variants. A stonecutter turns one source block into many of these shapes, and deepslate can be placed along three axes like logs. Silverfish can also hide inside it as infested deepslate.

| Orientation | Three placement axes |
| Silverfish | Can create infested deepslate |

Generated loot
An ancient-city furnace can generate with 24 deepslate. This source is separate from the block's normal mining drops.

Data values
The Java identifier is `minecraft:deepslate`. It is mineable with a pickaxe, belongs to the base-stone and deepslate replacement tags, and keeps the same 64-item stack limit as the block family.

History
Deepslate was introduced with the deep underground generation in 1.17. The early name was grimstone; the final block gained a darker texture, axis placement, cobbled drops without Silk Touch and a smelting path from cobbled deepslate during the 1.17 development cycle.

Trivia
The name describes both the block's slate-like appearance and its location deep below the surface. Its texture orientation changes with coordinates, which helps large underground surfaces avoid looking perfectly tiled.
