Coal Ore — block.
Obtaining
Coal ore is mined with a wooden or better pickaxe and yields coal and experience. It appears in ordinary stone and in deeper deepslate layers, so the surrounding block helps identify which mining route is being used. Exposed faces in caves are worth checking before starting a long branch mine.

Breaking
Use a wooden, stone, iron, diamond, or netherite pickaxe to collect the ore. A weaker tool does not preserve the block, while a suitable pickaxe turns the vein into coal and experience.

Natural generation
Coal ore forms in underground stone and can also replace deepslate at lower elevations. A vein that crosses the stone-to-deepslate transition is easier to read when the two host blocks are kept visible instead of immediately enclosing the tunnel.
The ordinary ore configuration allows a vein size of up to 17 blocks and does not discard placement merely because a face is exposed. The upper placed feature makes 30 attempts per chunk from Y 136 to the top of the world. The buried feature makes 20 attempts across a trapezoid from Y 0 to Y 192 and discards half of the placements exposed to air.

Usage
The block occupies a standard full volume and is shown with an isometric preview.
The ore provides coal for fuel and crafting coal blocks. Coal can feed a furnace, make torches, or become a compact storage block, so a vein supports early smelting, exploration lighting, and later building projects.

Crafting ingredient
Coal is the useful output rather than a decorative block ingredient: combine it with sticks for torches or compress it into a block when storage space matters. Fortune can increase the amount collected from a mined ore block.
