Written Book

Items

Written Book — item.

Obtaining

A written book is created when a book and quill is signed. Signing stores the title and author in the book and changes it from an editable draft into a finished copy. Signed books are renewable because players can create more from ordinary books and writable books.

Usage

Open a written book to read its pages. A signed book can be copied to another book and quill, placed on a lectern, or stored in a chiseled bookshelf. The lectern sends a redstone signal while the book is open; reaching the last page produces the strongest signal, 15.

There is no fixed page-count limit in the current format, but the book still has a finite text payload and is treated as a signed, read-only item after publication.

Related items

A written book has a copy generation. An Original can create a Copy of Original, and that copy can create a Copy of Copy. A Copy of Copy cannot be copied again, and the source book is not consumed by the copying operation.

Sounds

Reading uses page-turn sounds. Placing or removing a book from a lectern or chiseled bookshelf uses the corresponding workstation sound family.

Behavior

Signing a book stores its title, author, pages, and copy generation on the item. Opening it shows a reader instead of an editor. Destroying the item also destroys its stored contents, so a written book is a portable record rather than a separate world document.

Trivia

A signed book displays its own title instead of a generic item name. The generation field prevents endless copying while preserving the original as the source of the chain.
