Obtaining

Raw iron comes from iron ore and deepslate iron ore mined with a stone pickaxe or better. Fortune can increase the amount from a block, while Silk Touch preserves the ore block instead. Nine raw iron can also be compressed into one block of raw iron.

Usage

Raw iron is smelted in a furnace or blast furnace into iron ingots. Both recipes give 0.7 experience; the ingot then supplies tools, weapons, armour, and other iron recipes. The raw form is also useful for compact underground storage.

Trivia

Smelting raw iron is lossless: one unit always becomes one iron ingot. Compressing nine units into a raw-iron block is also reversible, so the block is storage rather than a new material tier.
