Furnace

Obtaining

A furnace can be crafted from eight cobblestone, blackstone, or cobbled deepslate blocks. Furnaces also appear in village houses, igloos, ancient cities, and trail ruins, so a first workstation does not always require a new recipe.

Breaking

A furnace requires a pickaxe to drop itself. Breaking it without a pickaxe destroys the block, while a normal break also drops any unprocessed input, fuel, and experience stored by completed smelts.

Usage

The block occupies a standard full volume and is shown with an isometric preview.

A furnace has a three-slot interface and can be automated with hoppers: one hopper feeds the input, another supplies fuel, and a third extracts the output. A lit furnace emits light level 13 and smoke and flame particles. Blast furnaces and smokers keep the same workflow but specialize in ores and food.

Sounds

An active furnace uses a looping crackle and fire sound. Opening the interface and placing or taking items use workstation interaction sounds.

Behavior

Fuel efficiency depends on the fuel item: a single coal burns long enough to process eight items. The furnace keeps burning the current fuel even if its input slot becomes empty, then waits for a new input before consuming another fuel item. Pistons cannot push or pull a furnace.

Smelting

A furnace processes one input item every 200 game ticks (10 seconds), or six items per minute. The upper slot holds the input, the lower slot holds one stack of fuel, and the output slot collects the result. Fuel starts burning as soon as the operation begins, so removing the input early can waste part of its burn time.
