Egg

Items

Egg — item.

Obtaining

An egg is a timed gift from a living adult chicken, not part of the chicken's death loot. The variant follows the chicken: temperate chickens lay normal eggs, while warm and cold variants lay brown and blue eggs. A fox can also carry a normal egg and drop it when killed.

Cold variantBlue egg

Crafting

The egg belongs to the shared `#minecraft:eggs` ingredient tag. That tag is accepted by the cake recipe and by pumpkin pie, so normal, blue, and brown eggs can follow the same food-crafting path.

Cake1 egg-tag ingredient with milk, sugar, and wheat
Pumpkin pie1 egg-tag ingredient with pumpkin and sugar

Usage

Eggs are recipe ingredients and throwable projectiles. A thrown egg deals no damage, but it can knock mobs back and has a one-in-eight chance to hatch a chick; one of those successful hatches can produce four chicks instead of one. Dispensers use the same projectile behavior.

Data: Usage
Hatch chance1/8 per impact
Four-chick chance1/32 of successful hatches
Damage0
Stack size16
DispenserCan launch eggs

Sounds

Chicken gifts and thrown eggs use separate sound events: the chicken announces a newly laid egg, while the player or dispenser uses the egg-throw event when launching a projectile.

Data: Sounds
Egg laidentity.chicken.egg
Egg thrownentity.egg.throw
Dispenser launchblock.dispenser.launch

Behavior

The thrown egg keeps the variant stored on the item, so a blue or brown egg hatches the matching chicken variant. The projectile is affected by gravity, consumes one item on use, and disappears after impact while emitting item particles.

Data values

The normal item identifier is `minecraft:egg`; the same item family also contains `minecraft:blue_egg` and `minecraft:brown_egg`. All three variants stack to 16, and a thrown egg is represented by the `minecraft:egg` projectile entity.

History

Eggs began as a throwable item and later became a food-recipe ingredient. Modern chicken variants extend the same system: the item keeps the variant metadata from the laying chicken through throwing and hatching.
