Lectern — block.
Obtaining
Lecterns are obtained from the shaped recipe or by breaking a placed lectern. They are also a natural workstation found in village libraries, so a village can supply the block before a player has a bookshelf ready. An ancient city can contain one in its central secret room.

Breaking
A lectern can be broken with any tool, but an axe is fastest. It drops itself and the book it is holding, so removing a filled lectern does not silently destroy the reading material.

Usage
A lectern holds one written book or writable book for players to read. Ordinary books and enchanted books cannot be placed on it. A librarian villager claims it as a workstation, and a redstone comparator can read the book's page position as a signal. Turning a page emits a short full-strength redstone pulse; removing or replacing the book changes the block's useful role without changing its compact footprint.

Fuel
A lectern is made of wood and can be used as furnace fuel. One lectern smelts 1.5 items, matching the compact fuel value of other wooden utility blocks.

Sounds
The block uses the wooden sound family for placement, breaking and footsteps. Turning a page uses the book page-turn event instead of a generic block sound.

Behavior
The lectern is a functional workstation rather than a storage chest: the book is displayed on its top surface and can be opened by interacting with the block. Its facing state controls the stand orientation, while the occupied state records whether a book is present.

History
The lectern was introduced as a book stand and later became the workstation for librarians. Its book interface, comparator output and page-turn sound turned the decorative stand into a compact reading and redstone component.

Trivia
The block has one book slot, but any number of players can read the displayed book at the same time. Its facing and book-present state are kept as block properties, while the actual pages live in the block entity.
